Cavagna Jose Damian-Retinopathy of Prematurity-(Argentina)

Before treatment:  
The patient was born prematurely at 28 weeks of gestation, placed in an incubator and suffered from asphyxia and anoxia. After rescue the patient's breathing returned to normal. 20 days after birth the doctor found that the patient had visual dysfunction and no sense of light in both eyes. After examination he was diagnosed with ROP and was discharged from the hospital 57 days later in the incubator. Since discharge he has no visual acuity and no sense of light in both eyes.
He has normal diet and sleep, has constipation and defecates once in 3 to 7 days. He has asthma.

Admission PE:
Bp: 123/76mmHg, Hr: 86/min, body temperature: 36.3 degrees. Height 88cm, weight 12Kg. Nutrition status is good with normal physical development. There is no injury or bleeding spots of his skin and mucosa, no blausucht and no throat congestion. Chest development was normal, the respiratory sounds in both lungs were clear and there was no dry or moist rales. The heart beat is powerful with regular cardiac rhythm and no obvious murmur in the valves. The abdomen was flat and soft, with no masses or tenderness. The liver and spleen were normal.

Nervous System Examination:
Patient was alert and had clear speech. He could not complete the memory,  comprehension and calculation ability examinations. Bilateral pupils were sunken and with covers, doctors could not examine his light reflex, there was no light sensation and the doctors could not check his eyes fundus because of a cataract. The bilateral forehead wrinkle and nasolabial fold are symmetrical, he can take food normally, the hearing ability was normal and the neck can move freely. The 4 limbs can move flexibly with the muscle power and muscle tone normal. The tendon reflexes were normal, abdominal reflex, the sucking reflex, the bilateral palm-jaw reflex and the Hoffmann sign of both sides were all negative. The Rossilimo sign of both sides and the Babinski sign were negative. The sensory and coordinate movement examination were normal and the meningeal irritation sign was negative.

Treatment:
After the admission he received 3 nerve regeneration treatments (neural stem cells and mesenchymal stem cells) to develop his retina, repair his damaged retinal cells and optic nerves, replace dead cells, nourish optic nerves and retinal cells, improve body environment, improve blood circulation. This was combined with rehabilitation training.   

Post-treatment:
After 14 days treatment his retina and optic nerves develped again but due to the cataract his retina has not developed not enough so his family decided to do another cycle of stem cells treatment after cataract surgery. His constipation was better.
