Uliana Shwaiz-Sequela of Herpes Encephalitis-(Russia)

Before treatment:
The patient had a fever for 2 months, she was short of breath, then had generalized convulsions and lost consciousness. Her family called the ambulance and she was diagnosed with herpes encephalitis. She woke up 17 days later but  had motor and cognitive function problems. She also had many further attacks so she stayed in hospital for more days to control the attacks. For now, when she is awake, she is overactive, can’t see anything, her swallowing function and cognitive function are bad and she can only eat  food mixed to a paste. Sometimes she is able to raise her head and turn her body over to the right side.
Her spirit is good, she uses medicines to defecate, her mind and sleep are normal.

Admission PE:
Bp: 96/68 mmHg, Hr: 121/min, breathing rate: 25/min, body temperature: 37.3 degrees. Height: 100cm, weight: 16Kg. She had irregular frequency epilepsy between 2 times per day or only once in a week. When she had a seizure her eyes look awry to the right side and the body limbs had paroxysmal twitch. It could last a few seconds and then relax again. Her nutrition status was good but there was physical development delay. There is no injury or bleeding spots of her skin and mucosa, no blausucht, no throat congestion and no ulcers. Chest develop was good, breathing sounds of both lungs were clear with no dry or moist rales. The heart beat is strong with irregular cardiac rhythm but no obvious murmur in the valves. The abdomen was soft and flat with no masses or tenderness. The liver and spleen were normal, spinal column and 4 limbs development were normal.

Nervous System Examination:
Patient was alert, cannot speak and could not complete the examinations for memory, orientation and calculation ability. She was blind with nearly no light perception, the pupils diameter was 3.0 mm and had a very clumsy reaction to light. Bilateral forehead wrinkle and nasolabial groove was symmetrical. She would choke occasionally with drooling. Her neck could move freely, she could not sit up, stand or walk. She could roll over to right side in bed, the hands could lift. She could not grasp or hold things and could not complete the 4 limbs muscle power examination. There was involuntary movement of her 4 limbs when she was awake. Muscle tone of the limbs were nearly normal, her right body side prone to bending. The abdomen reflex was normal, tendon reflex of the arms could be induced, leg tendon reflexes were active. She had right foot drop, the  pathological reflex of the arms were negative, right side Babinski sign was positive, left side Babinski sign was negative. She could not complete the exam of the sensory and coordinate movement. 

Treatment:
After the admission she received related examinations and was diagnosed with 1. Sequela of herpes encephalitis 2. Secondary epilepsy. She received Herpes Encephalitis to repair her damaged nerves, replace dead nerves, nourish nerves, regulate her immune system and improve blood circulation. This was done with rehabilitation training.     

Post-treatment:
After 14 days treatment her seizures reduced obviously, she could roll over in bed and move her legs with much more  flexibility. Raising her head action was better than before, her pronunciation was increased but she had no concrete meaning.
