Before treatment:
Four years ago, the patient’s experienced decline in vision of the left eye. He didn’t receive any treatment when he was diagnosed with left eye mild macular dystrophy. The eyes of the patient progressively decreased in vision. The left eye was worse. It couldn’t see fingers, couldn’t identify the distance and had metamorphopsia. After the examination, his macular atrophy had progressively increased. The local hospital couldn’t treat it well, so he came to our hospital.

He was in good spirit. His weight was normal. His eating, urination and excrement were good. He couldn’t sleep well.

Admission PE:
Bp: 153/84mmHg, Hr: 90/min, Br: 19/min. Height: 171 cm, weight: 80kg. He’s growth was normal. His skin mucosa was normal with no yellow stains or petechia. His thorax was symmetrical. The respiration of both lungs was clear, without moist rales. The heart sound was strong, and the cardiac rhythm was regular, and there was no obvious murmur in the valves. The abdomen bulged and soft, with no masses. The liver and spleen were normal. There was no dropsy of both ankles.  

Nervous System Examination:
He was alert and his speech was clear. His memory, orientation and calculation ability were normal. The diameter of both pupils was 3.0mms and both pupils were sensitive to direct and indirect light reflex. Visual acuity test (3-meter visual acuity test chart): right eye: 40/100, left eye: 6/100. His color discrimination was a slightly weak. He had weakness in distinguishing color. The movement of eyeballs to each side was good and there was no obvious nystagmus or visual field defect. Through use of an ophthalmoscope: The color of right bottoms of eyes was orange. The boundary of macular area was not clear. The boundary of optic papilla was clear. AV ratio was 1:4. Half of the bottom of left eye was light yellow, others was orange. The boundary of macular area and optic papilla were not clear. AV ratio was 1:4. The forehead wrinkle pattern was symmetrical. The nasolabial sulcus was equal in depth. The teeth were symmetrical and the tongue was centred. There was free movement in the neck. The muscle tone of all four limbs was almost normal. The muscle strength of all four limbs was almost at level 5. The abdominal reflex was negative. The tendon reflexes in four limbs were normal. The sucking reflex was negative. The palm jaw reflex was positive. The bilateral Hoffmann’s sign was negative. Both lower side limbs pathologic reflex was negative. The deep and shallow sensation was normal. The coordinated movements were normal.

Treatment:
We gave him a complete examination and he was diagnosed with macular dystrophy. He received treatment to improve the blood circulation in order to increase the blood supply to the damaged neurons and to nourish them. He also had rehabilitation exercise. 

Post-treatment:
After the treatment, his condition improved. Right eye vision increased to 40%. Left eye vision increased to 40%. Visual acuity test (3-meter visual acuity test chart): right eye: 100/100, left eye: 15/100. Visual acuity test (3-meter visual acuity test chart): left eye: 25/100. He could see objects more clearly. Through the use of an ophthalmoscope: The color of the bottom of right eye was orange. AV ratio was 1:3. The boundary of macular area was not clear. The boundary of optic papilla was clear. The color of the bottom of left eye was orange. AV ratio was 1:3. The boundary of macular area was not clear. The boundary of optic papilla was clear. At present, Geoffrey Whale’s treatment has been completed and discharge has been permitted.

Hello Dr Susan. This is Geoff Whale in Australia. I have a friend with advanced Copd. Is this on your list of possible treatments, if so gave you a result percentage please,  my eyes are holding up well, I am grateful . Please five my regards to Dr Peng and Cheong Vas in physiology.
