Bautista Vera-Retinopathy of Prematurity-(Argentina)

Diagnosis: Retinopathy of Prematurity(ROP) grade 5

Before treatment:
The patient was born prematurely after a 6 month pregnancy and was put in an incubator. A  family member noticed his eyes were different to normal when he was one month old and he was diagnosed with ROP grade 5. After examinations it was discovered that he only had light sense. He underwent laser surgery to stabilize his retina but after the surgery his vision functions were not improved.
His spirit, sleep and diet are normal. His urination and defecation functions are normal.

Admission PE:
Bp: 108/88mmHg, Hr: 85/min, breathing rate: 20/min, body temperature: 36.6 degrees. His height is 130 cm, weight 28Kg. Nutrition status is good with normal physical development. There is no injury or bleeding spots of his skin and mucosa, no blausucht and no yellow stains on the skin. Chest development was normal, the respiratory sounds in both lungs were clear and there were no dry or moist rales. The heart beat is powerful with regular cardiac rhythm and with no obvious murmur in the valves. The abdomen was flat and soft, with no masses or tenderness. The liver and spleen were normal.

Nervous System Examination:
Patient was alert and had clear speech. His memory, orientation and calculation ability were normal . Both pupils were equal in size and round, displayed a clumsy response to the light, there was punctiform sediment covering surrounding both pupils and he could not complete the color or nystagmus examination. Both eyes had light perception ability, he was hollow-eyed and with strong light he could sense the objects waggle. He was frequently rubbing of his eyes. The bilateral forehead wrinkle and nasolabial fold are symmetrical, he could swallow as normal, hearing ability was normal and the neck can move freely. The muscle tone, muscle power and tendon reflex  of the four limbs were normal, abdomen reflex was normal, sucking reflex was negative. Bilateral palm-jaw reflex was negative. The Hoffmann sign of both sides was negative, the Rossilimo sign of both sides was negative, the Babinski sign of both sides was negative. His sensory and coordinate movement were basically normal. The meningeal irritation sign was negative.

Treatment:
After the admission he received related examinations and received 3 times cells regeneration treatment to repair his damaged retina, replace dead retinal cells, nourish retinal cells, regulate his immune system and improve blood circulation. This was done with rehabilitation training.     

Post-treatment:
After 20 days treatment he did not rub his eyes as much, could distinguish the objects shape in front of him and pointed to where the  objects were. He was now able to see some colours.
