Emma Thaisa Hoyos Saldana-Retinopathy of prematurity stage 5 (ROP V)-(Peru)
Patient Name: Emma Thaisa Hoyos Saldana
Gender: Female
Age: 6 years old
Nationality: Peru
Disease Diagnosis: Retinopathy of prematurity stage 5 (ROP V)
Before Treatment:
The patient has Retinopathy of prematurity stage 5 (ROP V), experiencing difficulty seeing. Her left eye has a naked-eye vision of 0.08 at 3 meters and a corrected vision of 0.2 at the same distance. Her right eye has no vision and no light reflex.
Admission Examination:
The patient's blood pressure was 83/57 mmHg, and her heart rate was 92 beats per minute. No abnormalities were detected during lung and heart auscultation. There was no enlargement of the liver or spleen. There was no edema in her lower limbs.
Neurological Examination:
The patient was alert and speaks clearly. Her memory and calculation abilities were normal. The diameter of her left pupil was 3 mm, with a light reflex present. She could recognize faces at a distance of 1 meter and can distinguish colors; her naked-eye vision at 3 meters was approximately 0.08, and her corrected vision at that distance was 0.2. The diameter of her right pupil was also 3 mm, with no vision and no light reflex; she had cataracts in her right eye. Fundoscopy revealed a cataract in the right eye, making fundus examination difficult, with fibrotic changes in the fundus accompanied by retinal detachment; the fundus of the left eye appeared pale yellow with poor blood supply. Eye movements in all directions were somewhat limited in both eyes, and there was horizontal and vertical nystagmus. Her forehead wrinkles were symmetrical, and her tongue was centered. Neck mobility was good. Muscle strength in her limbs was at level 5, and her muscle tone was normal. Pathological signs were negative, and meningeal irritation signs were negative.
Treatment Process:
The patient was definitively diagnosed upon admission with "Retinopathy of prematurity stage V (ROP V)." She was treated with mesenchymal stem cells and neural stem cells to repair the retina and optic nerve, supplemented with CAST therapy to nourish the retina and optic nerve, improve circulation, and regulate immunity, combined with comprehensive visual rehabilitation therapy.
After Treatment:
The patient’s visual function is improved significantly: her vision becomes clearer, her visual field expands, and the distance at which she can see objects increased notably. The naked-eye vision of her left eye is improved from 0.08 to 0.15, and her corrected vision is improved from 0.2 to 0.4, representing a 30% increase in visual acuity. Additionally, light reflex is observed in her right eye.
