Ebtehaj Basttahm-Cerebral Palsy-(Iran)

Name: Ebtehaj Basttahm

Sex: Male

Country: Iran

Age: 7 years

Diagnosis: Cerebral Palsy

Beginning of Treatment: Oct 29th, 2008

Medical History before Stem Cell Treatment:

When the patient was 2 years old, he had binocular glaucoma disease, and underwent surgery to treat it. After the operation, he had poor sight in both eyes. At 7 years old, his height was 116.4cm, weight was 19.5kg. He was thin and small with poor nutrition. He was alert. His memory and orientation were normal, but his computational skills were poor. There were some uncoordinated movements with his fingers. His eyeballs can move freely with no signs of nystagmus. The muscle tension in both legs was slightly high. He wondered why he had problems walking and why his legs were so weak because his gait was unstable.

Treatment:

We gave the patient four implantations of stem cells. We also used self stem cells activation treatment to repair the damage to the neurons. The patient received treatment to improve blood circulation and increase the blood supply to the damaged nerves and to nourish the neurons. Daily rehabilitation training was included to promote the recovery of his motor functioning.

After Stem Cell Treatment:

The patient showed obvious improvement after the treatment. The patient's diet is much healthier and he has a much better appetite. After the treatment, his height was 120 cm and his weight was 20.5kg. He has a much happier disposition. His cognitive abilities have distinctly improved. He can count from 1 to 20, read the English alphabet from A to E and can perform simple addition and subtraction. The muscles in both arms are normal and his movements are more coordinated and flexible than before. The strength in both legs has increased markedly and has reached level 3+. The muscle tone in both legs is now normal. He can walk with both heels touching the floor. With little support, he can walk and his gait is more stable than before.

When the patient left the hospital, he was taking his medications as prescribed. His condition was stable and his learning ability improved quickly. He has now arrived at our hospital for the second treatment.

Second Treatment:  June 29th, 2009

Admission PE: height: 121cm, weight: 21kg. Basttahm's nutrition was poorer than normal and as a result was very thin. His chest was symmetrical. His lungs, heart and abdomen were all ok.

Nervous System Examination: Basttahm was alert and his speech was clear. His memory, orientation and comprehension were normal. His calculation ability was poor. Both pupils were equal and round and could move freely and react normally to light stimulus with no signs of nystagmus. The diameter was 3.5 mm. The forehead wrinkles were symmetrical, and he was able to close his eyes normally. The nasolabial sulcus was equal in depth. The teeth were shown without deflexion; the tongue was in the middle of the oral cavity. The neck could move freely. The muscle tension of both upper limbs was normal, while the muscle tension of both lower limbs was higher than normal. The muscle strength of the upper limbs was level-5, while the muscle strength of the left lower limb was about level-3. The muscle strength of the right lower limb was also about level-3. The abdominal reflex was normal. The tendon reflexes of both upper limbs were normal. The tendon reflexes of both lower limbs were active. Positive ankle clonus with the left ankle, negative ankle clonus with the right ankle. Negative sucking reflex and negative bilateral jaw reflex, bilateral Hoffman's sign was negative. Pathologic reflex of both lower limbs was positive. Normal deep and shallow sensitivity.

Basttahm was awkward when he took the coordination test and was not able to complete the "follow the knee" test.

Post Treatment:

Basttahm's condition has noticeably improved. His intelligence level is almost normal. His comprehension ability is better than before; he can speak Chinese and count from 1 to 10. He often says hello to the doctors and nurses and is friendly with the other patients. Height: 127cm, weight 27kg. He is taller and at a healthier weight than before. The movements in both upper limbs are more coordinated and flexible than before. He has more body control and stability than before. The muscle strength of his abdomen is stronger and the muscle strength has increased from level-3 to level-4. While participating in rehabilitation training, Basttahm can ride the exercise bike when set at the highest amount of resistance. The muscle tension is almost normal, only the muscle tension of the inner thighs is higher than normal. His heels can touch the floor fully when he walks and his walking posture is almost normal. He can stand alone without assistance for more than 10 minutes, and walk more than 6 or 7 steps.

Basttahm is a much happier child now and the doctors and nurses are all fond of him. We all believe he has a very bright and promising future in head of him.
