Muramatsu devolved tremors in his left hand without inducement about four and a half years ago. He didn't go to a hospital quickly enough and soon developed speech problems and micrographia. He would occasionally choke when he swallowed and his walking was characterized by small steps. He also had difficulty turning around. Muramatsu was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease when he eventually went to a local hospital. He was prescribed L-dopa which was effective for a short period of time. After some time, his left leg became stiff. Muramatsu was able to do most daily activities, including brushing his teeth and taking a bath, but these activities could only be done slowly. He could turn over while in bed, but it was very difficult for him. As time went on, his symptoms progressed.
During the examination of his nervous system, Muramatsu was alert but his speech was unclear. He was only able to answer basic questions that were asked to him. His memory, calculation abilities, and orientation were normal. It was also discovered that he had tremors in the tongue muscles. The muscles that raise the soft palate were strong, though. The uvula was shifted to the right side, but could move with flexibility. The muscle strength of both upper limbs was level 4. The muscle strength of both lower limbs was level 4+, both upper limbs were presented with static tremors, and the right arm was more severe. The muscle tone of all four limbs was normal. The tendon reflexes of both upper limbs were weak. The tendon reflexes of both lower limbs weren't elicited. The bilateral abdominal reflexes were also not elicited. The bilateral Hoffmann's sign was negative, the bilateral sucking reflex was positive, the bilateral palmomental reflex was negative, and the bilateral Babinski's sign was positive. Muramatsu had normal sensation and depth of feeling on the left side of the body. The left arm was uncoordinated with the finger-nose-test, rapid rotation test and the digital opposition test. The coordinated movements of the right side were good. Muramatsu's gait was slow and he had difficulty with turning round. The Romberg's sign was poor. There were no signs of meningeal irritation.
After receiving treatment at his local hospital with limited improvement, he decided to come to our medical center after learning what our stem cell technology could do to help his symptoms.Before the start of the treatment program, Muramatsu received all of the relevant examinations. He then received anti-Parkinson's treatment, had his blood pressure brought under control, was given anti-coagulants and anti-free radicals. He was also given treatment in order to expand the blood vessels to improve the cerebral blood-supply, given nourishment for the neurons and we activated the neural stem cells. This was combined with daily physical rehabilitation training.
After the completion of the treatment, Muramatsu's blood pressure was 120-130/80-90mmHg, INR was about 1.5. His facial expressions were more natural. The tremors in the tongue and arms had disappeared. The muscle strength of both lower limbs had increased obviously. The physical examination showed that the muscle strength of lower limbs was level 5-, his gait is normal and his walking rate is faster and his endurance has increased. Muramatsu can also turn around more quickly. He can now finish the finger-nose-test, rapid rotation test and the digital opposition test normally.
The nurse who takes care of Muramatsu said: "He can now eat and walk much better than before."
