New research suggests lead exposure may be the reason behind some attention deficit hyperactivity cases.

A new report out of the Oregon Health and Science University says children diagnosed with ADHD have slightly higher levels of lead in their blood, compared to other kids.
And additional research saw the same link to reports of ADHD symptoms from parents and teachers.

A scientist at the university says lead is a neurotoxin and it attaches itself to parts of the brain where genes affecting development and activity are.

The lead disrupts the genes' activity, contributing to ADHD symptoms.

The report says this may explain up to 30 percent of ADHD cases where heredity doesn't appear to play a role.
